The war was finally over.  We heard of the shortage of supplies in Europe, so we made a parcel of daily use items we bought at neighboring stores, and sent it to our relatives in Europe.

Shortly we received a very grateful letter with this paragraph in their mother tongue:

“If possible, will you send us more pills?  We didn’t know what they were at first.  But Cousin Lempi came, and she read the name for us.  She has studied English, you know.  Once we knew what they were, we gave them all to Uncle Paul.  He has been suffering from rheumatism, and he feels much better now.  He says it is the best medicine he ever took.  Just to make sure, the pills we need are called Life Savers.

The Life Savers we sent were candies the sweets.  Lempi interpreted the name literally as the ones which save life, that is, pills.  To Uncle Paul who ate the candies believing he was taking medicine, the placebo effect took place, and it relieved his rheumatism.  Our relatives were thrilled to see Uncle Paul’s recovery, and they wanted to get more of the wonderful pills.
