A farmer on a city-bound train found a man next to him behaving quite strangely: glancing quickly out of the window, muttering to himself, glancing again. Overcome with curiosity, he asked the man what he was doing. The man replied, “I’m a lightning calculator. I can count the number of things at lightning speed. Just for fun, I’m counting the number of things that catch my eye. I never make a mistake.”
The farmer was marveled at his ability, but at the same time, dubious about the credibility of his incredible story, couldn’t resist the temptation of witnessing his ability on his own eyes. He began, “In a few minutes we’re going to pass my pasture. I know the exact number of cows grazing there — would you care …?”, then the man was quick to surmise his intention and willingly agreed to be put to the test.
As the train rushed past the pasture he gave one glance at the cows and announced “157.” “Amazing,” exclaimed the farmer and asked, “How did you do it?” “It’s easy,” replied the calculator. “All I did was to count the cows’ teats and divide by four.”
For the calculator, just counting the number of cows was a piece of cake, because he was doing that kind of things for fun every day. So, to make the test a little more challenging, he counted the cow’s teats and divided it by four.
