A man often took a shortcut through a cemetery on his way home. One night, unaware that a new grave had been dug in his path, he tumbled in. For some time, he desperately struggled to get out, but soon realized that he couldn’t climb the seven-foot-deep grave, and decided to settle for the night.
An hour later, a farmer, out possum hunting, came walking through the cemetery and he too fell into the grave. He began a desperate attempt to get out, unaware that there was anyone else in the grave.
The first man listened to the farmer’s attempt for a while. He knew that the farmer wouldn’t make it, so he reached over in the pitch-darkness, laid a hand on the farmer’s shoulder, and said, “You cannot get out of here.” He then started to say, “I tried, too, but failed.” But the farmer was nowhere to be seen. He had magically vanished.
The two men had both desperately tried to get out of the grave, in vain. They were surely not in the daily situation, but it was still not enough to get the power to overcome the seven-foot-deep wall. On the other hand, the farmer, who suddenly had a hand laid on his shoulder and was spoken to in the pitch-darkness of the grave where he had no idea of the presence of anyone else, must have thought it was a ghost. That fear evoked the power beyond human capability in him, and he ran up the seven-foot-deep wall to outside.
