１月１６日の英文添削「日本語での解釈例」への挑戦として以下のものを書いてみました。講師のどなたかに添削して頂き結果を後日投稿します。これを機会によい英文が書けるようになりたいと思います。

Former Vice President Garner had lost a ten-dollar bet on a Washington baseball game.

He was handing over a ten-dollar bill to the winner when the winner asked Garner to autograph it.  He was giving the autographed bill to his grandson for a souvenir, he said.  “He wants to frame it and hang it in his room.” he offered further explanation.

On hearing where the bill was destined, Garner asked the winner, “Then the money’s not going to be spent, is it?”  When the answer was affirmative, Garner said, “Then I’ll just write you a check!”

Garner knew that the ten-dollar bill he was going to hand over was not going to be spent.  If so, he thought, paying the lost money by a check instead of by a bill, while it didn’t matter for the winner, meant a lot for him.  Because the ten dollars would never be withdrawn from his bank account, he could save ten dollars, couldn’t he?  He proposed the idea right away.  A Texan with a rough personality for everything, Garner didn’t care what the winner might think of him: former Vice President making a proposal like this to save ten dollars.  He kept demonstrating the attitude like this without hesitation in the political world as well until he died only 15 days prior to his ninety ninth birthday.
