The war was finally over.  We heard of the supply shortage in Europe, so we bought daily use items at neighborhood stores, made a parcel, and sent it to our relatives in Europe.

Shortly after, we received a very grateful letter with this paragraph written in their mother tongue:

“If possible, will you send us more pills?  We didn’t know what they were at first. But Cousin Lempi came, and she read the name for us.  She has studied English, you know. Once we knew what they were, we gave them all to Uncle Paul.  He has been suffering from rheumatism, and he feels much better now. He says it is the best medicine he ever took.  Just to make sure, the pills we need are called Life Savers.”

The Life Savers we sent were candies.  Lempi interpreted the name literally, as pills that save lives. Uncle Paul ate the candies believing he was taking medicine. The placebo effect relieved his rheumatism.  Our relatives were thrilled to see Uncle Paul’s recovery, and they wanted more of the wonderful pills.
