In New York the Women’s Action Committee for Lasting Peace wrote to George Bernard Shaw in London asking him to autograph some books for a fund-raising auction.
Shaw replied that he would not. He thought the cause of the United Nations was “too big for your little Women’s Action Committee.” He scoffed at some length.
The women went ahead with the auction anyhow. A popular autographed book brought only $70. But Shaw’s grouchy letter sold for $170.
